Shark Bait
Age Group: 5-8 Prerequisites: None
Boat: Vanguard Pram Students/Boat: 2-4
Instructor Certification: US Sailing Level 1 Dinghy
The Shark Bait class is designed for children ages 5 to 8 who are new to sailing. The program is run under very close instructor supervision and at a slow pace. The students sail in the harbor and close to shore, which is ideal for parents to watch. The class emphasizes the basics of safety, boat parts, rigging and basic sailing theory. We use only Prams and Bugs, which are ideally suited for small sailors. This class will be run Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, as well as the week of August 23-27. Pram Class
Age Group: 8-10* Prerequisites: None
Boat: Vanguard Pram Students/Boat: 2
Instructor Certification: US Sailing Level 1 Dinghy
The pram class offers a outstanding opportunity for younger children to get a solid fundamental start in the sport of sailing. Students learn basic sailing terminology, boat nomenclature, basic sailing knots. Children will also spend many hours on the water learning how to steer and trim sails, perform capsize recoveries and are introduced to introductory sailing theory concepts.

420 Beginner/Intermediate
Age Group: 10-14 Prerequisites: None
Boat: Club 420 Students/Boat: 2-3
Instructor Certification: US Sailing Level 1 Dinghy
Elementary and middle school students will get lots of exeperience learning to sail the premiere junior racing/training boat in the US. Students learn basic sailing terminology, boat nomenclature, basic sailing knots. On the water skills include tacking and jibing, steering skills, sail trim, launching and docking boats, capsize recovery. Basic sailing drills will be introduced and practiced. 420 Advanced
Age Group: 13-18 Prerequisites: 420 Beginner/Intermediate*
Boat: Club 420 Students/Boat: 2
Instructor Certification: US Sailing Level 1 Dinghy
The 420 Advanced class alows students who have mastered basic sailing skills to take it to the next level. Students will learn advanced boathandling techniques and the use of trapeeze and spinnaker. Basic racing rules and racing drills will be introduced. Sail theory and concepts will be covered in detail.
*Students that are new to the program may be exempt from taking 420 Beginner/Intermediate due to previous sailing experience. Please contact the sailing school for more information.

Instructor Certification: US Sailing Level 1 and Level 2 Dinghy Instructor
The race team is the highest level of junior education at Columbia Sailing School. Team members receive coaching from some of the best instructors around, virtually all of them a product of the Columbia Race Team.
